A Day in the Life of a Teenager With SAD

A Day in the Life of a Teenager With SAD An earlier article presented a fictional first-person account  of someone with social anxiety disorder (SAD). The goal of that article was to add a personal touch to the informational articles contained on this site. Perhaps the article described someone you know. You may have even experienced some of those symptoms yourself. As a new addition to this series, here is a day in the life of a teenager with SAD. Although SAD symptoms in teens are not always different from those experienced by adults, teens may express their anxiety somewhat differently from adults. In many ways the challenges that they face can be even harder; social and academic pressures can often make social anxiety symptoms worse.?? Perhaps you are a teenager with social anxiety and this story sounds a lot like you. Or, you might be a parent, teacher or other adult who knows a teenager who seems overly fearful, anxious and shy. Will today be the day that you reach out for help or offer it to someone else? A Teens Day With SAD This description is based on stories told by readers of this website, as well as several true stories about teenage social anxiety including Kirstins Story: No Place to Stand, Rae: My True Story of Fear, Anxiety and Social Phobia, and What You Must Think of Me: A Firsthand Account of One Teenagers Experience of Social Anxiety Disorder. This is a fictional account and not based on the experiences of any one person. I climb the steps of my high school grudgingly, knowing what lies ahead. I have no friends at this school so it is one long day of loneliness. I always arrive early because I am afraid of being late for class. I couldnt stand the thought of walking in late and having everyone look at me. Since I arrive early, the teachers often pass by me. I keep my head down so that we dont have to say hi to each other and the awkwardness that would involve. I know what they are thinking. What is wrong with her? Why doesnt she have anyone to talk to? I arrive at my first-period class and listen to the chatter around me. Everyone is talking about their weekend. I keep my head down and try not to catch anyones eye. I do the same with the teacher in the hopes that he will not ask me a question. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. If asked a question, I quickly mutter a response, wishing the floor would just open up and swallow me whole. During lunch, I usually sit alone or with a group of kids I used to know but have nothing in common with anymore. I know they wonder why I am sitting with them when I never talk. Sometimes one of them will ask me a question. I usually keep my eyes focused on my food and pretend I dont hear them. I am sure everyone wonders what is wrong with me. Ive tried to schedule classes scheduled my classes to avoid any public speaking. Unfortunately, it cant be totally avoided. When I have a presentation or speech to give I worry about it months in advance. If it is in my last period class I cant concentrate for the entire day. When I finally get up to speak my heart is beating so loudly I am sure everyone can hear it. My hands shake and so does my voice. I have trouble catching my breath. I am sure everyone thinks I am crazy or that there is something really wrong with me. Outside of school I am not really involved in any activities. I dont have a part-time job like most of the other kids because I am too afraid to apply or go for an interview. I spend most nights and weekends at home reading or doing homework. I havent talked to anyone about the way I feel because I am 1) too embarrassed, and 2) worried that they will think I am making a mountain out of a molehill. I should be able to do these things, right? Its just a character flaw that I have such trouble with social situations. If I try really hard I should be able to become more outgoing and able to cope. My music teacher did try to talk to me once about my anxiety. She could see how anxious I got and asked me what was wrong but I just brushed it off. I was too embarrassed to talk about the way I was feeling; like she would think I was crazy or something. It is pretty ironic that the reason I cant talk to anybody about being afraid of people is because I am afraid of people! Sometimes I get really down about the way things are; I think I might even be a little depressed at times. It just wears on you when anxiety is constantly with you. I am both anxious and hopeful about the future. I am hoping that when I finish high school things will get easier. Hopefully, I can start fresh somewhere that nobody knows me and work on my fears. Maybe at some point, I will get up the courage to get the help that I probably really do need. A  Word From Verywell Both medication and therapy (such as cognitive-behavioral therapy) are effective in treating social anxiety disorder (SAD). Much more is known about anxiety disorders now than 20 years ago. If you are living with social anxiety and do choose to seek help, there are many options to get better. In the meantime, continue to make it through each day. Read stories about other teenagers with the same problems as you and participate in online forums about social anxiety. Perhaps you wish someone would take the time to ask you what is wrong. Maybe, if you could just talk to one person about the way that you feel, you might be able to get past this problem that is consuming every moment of your life. Who will that person be? Choose someone, and make today the day that you share how you are feeling.

Organizational Communication Approaches And Processes By...

The â€Å"real world† is coming soon. The moment we all wait for, the moment we are able to put on our graduation caps, and have the sense of relief. We’re done! But as the soon-to-be graduates are handed their diplomas, and we being the search, some of dread. A recurring theme in recent graduate job search is the lack of experience factor. Where do I get experience if no one is willing to hire me? â€Å"What will set our resume apart from the rest?† Easy answer, internships. Many students focus on gaining experience with internships to add to the resume. Work experience makes you more marketable as a job candidate; it also gives you the opportunity to fully understand the field you have chosen. Then you can truly enter your field with your eyes wide open. Employers are not only looking for experience, but the right experience. Theme Of The Blind Man - 867 Words

The theme is the man finding his inner self through the blind man. It was not like nothing else in his life and he enjoyed the experience and that he could relate to the blind man (Craver, 1981, p. 32) The plot begins when a blind man comes to visit his wife they had not seen each other in a very long time. Successful organizations know that to win in today’s competitive marketplace they must attract, develop, and retain a talented and productive staff. Winning organizations get their competitive edge from a performance management system that communicates the organization’s vision and values, aligns individual and team performance goals with the organization’s strategic objectives, outlines career development paths for each team member, and provides ongoing feedback for staff development. We will guide you through the development of your Competency Based Performance Management System, customizing the program to reflect the unique needs of your organization. A Senior Consultant will work with your leadership team to develop a model that will maximize employee input, buy-in and utilization of the new review process. Performance management system training is a process that uses your employees to their full potential, developing the talents of the existing workforce as a cost-effective way to increase the bottom line. These systematic training programs ensure the goals of your company are consistently met by each individual employee. Performance management helps evaluate each employee to see if he is in the right position, and a continued training program develops his skills to their highest level. Having a common goal among employees and management is what makes a company successful. Performance management system training teaches and develops these common goals. When you train your employees effectively, they know what is expected of them and need less monitoring. Employee morale is boosted when each employee feels she is adequately qualified for her job position. Positive morale has proven to increase productivity, which ultimately means higher profits for the business. Performance management includes employee appraisals as a necessary first step. Discerning how your employees currently perform helps you determine how you would like them to perform. You can then set the goals necessary to bridge that gap. You will create a checklist of what you want to assess in each employee, establish a deadline for completing the appraisals and determine how you will go about the evaluation. Performance management is all about motivating employees to do better, so these appraisals are an opportunity for supervisor and staff to mutually agree on goals that will help them succeed. Examples and behavior of Performance management. A management system is the framework of processes and procedures used to ensure that an organization can fulfill all tasks required to achieve its objectives. For instance, an environmental management system enables organizations to improve their environmental performance through a process of continuous improvement. An oversimplification is â€Å"Plan, Do, Check, Act†. A more complete system would include accountability (an assignment of personal responsibility) and a schedule for activities to be completed, as well as auditing tools to implement corrective actions in addition to scheduled activities, creating an upward spiral of continuous improvement. Also as in the aforementioned management system, an occupational health and safety management system enables an organization to control its occupational health and safety risks and to improve its performance by means of continuous improvement. A management system is a proven framework for managing and continually improving your organization’s policies, procedures and processes. The best businesses work as complete units with a shared vision. This may encompass information sharing, benchmarking, team working and working to the highest quality and environmental principles. A management system helps your organization to achieve these goals through a number of strategies, including process optimization, management focus and disciplined management thinking. Performance Management Systems Performance management is a discipline that aims at promoting organizational performance by managing the human capital of an organization. The know-how, skills and capabilities that inherent and used by workers in an organization are referred to as human capital. Human capital is an integral asset of any business, company or organization and many of them have concentrated their investments of human capital. Why are organizations interested in the development management and promotion of human capital? Is human capital becoming more and more relevant to organizations? Studies have indicated that there is a huge overt and covert influence of human capital on the performance of any organization and business and there has been intensive research on human capital as a factor in business and organizational performance. This is why organizations are increasingly empowering their human resource departments which deal with the human capital. It has been proved by various studies that any practice that promotes or enhances human capital influences organizational performance directly by molding organizational behavior and attitudes. Human capital also creates structural and operational focal points that improve efficiency. According to most business executives, people are the most integral assets in any organization because they are the ones that make the rest of the assets to function. They have proved that investment in people often lead to improved revenue and profit margins. However the problem that arises from this assertion is that human capital as an asset is not tangible. This means that is cannot be in any way captured in financial results and statement. This puts a challenge on the business executives to empirically prove that investments in the human capital adds positive value to an organization that results to the growth of the organization and additional, value to the shareholders. There are some indicators that can measure the effectiveness of human capital in a business. They include the image of the organization, popularity with headhunters, experience, satisfaction and loyalty but these signals are not efficient because they do not put a real estimate on the added value to the company. In simple terms, the influence of human capital on the growth of a business is something that cannot be easily documented quantitatively. This is what challenges business executives in their attempt to claim that people are the most important asset in any business. This complicates their quest for the organizations to allow more funding to enhance and promote the human capital they claim is the most integral asset. The human resource management departments in organizations in Australia have realized that human capital needs additional support for the organizations to grow in terms of market share, competitive advantage and revenue base. The emphasis on human capital by businesses and organizations in Australia is based not only on conventional ideals of human capital but also on the contemporary knowledge and information based world of organizations. in a society which is becoming revolutionized by technology, the concept of human capital cannot remain static. For businesses to remain competitive and productive in this digital age, the workforce must therefore be equipped with the relevant skills to keep them at par with the dynamics of technology. This will ensure that things to do with on job training must be emphasized. Additional financial capital needs to be channeled towards the human resource departments to facilitate the training of the workforce. Human Capital and Strategic Planning Strategic decision making must precede the HR functions of the organizations because it is the strategic decisions made that will determine how the strategic functions will be carried out. An organization must therefore identify its missions and visions which must be articulated to all the shareholders. Clear visions and missions are very fundamental for the development of HR strategies because they have to be relevant with the literacy levels and the competencies of the employees who will have to face the challenge of delivering it. One of the problems faced by organizations is the development of unrealistic strategic plans that completely destabilize the HR functions. This is because at times there is absence of leadership competence that does not understand that there is an umbilical cord that connects the strategies with their relevance to the people who will be supposed to execute it. This is why the HR department must also be part of the strategic decision making process and the best way of helping in the making of the strategic decisions is by using its competencies model where the competencies of the already existing employees are factored in such that while most of the visions and missions being planned will be planned around the competencies and the creativity levels of the existing employees. This will minimize the need to make a complete overhaul or a reengineering that would be occasioned by strategic decisions that do not factor in the competencies of the employees. Where the strategic decisions go beyond the competencies of the existing HR, external recruitment would be the most appropriate HR function otherwise, internal promotions based on competencies and performance would be the most viable option as long as the competencies and the performance of the existing HR is factored in during the strategic decision making process (Bradford, 2000). The strategic plans can be easily realized using a HR team that is already acquainted with the practices of the organization meaning that the internal promotions would be the most viable HR practice especially when recruiting for middle level and top management positions. The use of the correct HR practices will enable an organization to adopt a holistic approach that will enable it to capitalize on the competitive market trends avoiding internal divisions and personal agendas that end up blocking the path to the realization of the strategic plans. Recommendations There are a few recommendations that will made that will help in the improvement of performance management systems 1. Firms should invest more in human capital because it is the single most important economic resource of any organization 2. The human capital should be availed with the necessary resources for them to be able to give firms a competitive advantage 3. Human capital should be included in the strategic decisions of a firm because they are the ones who will work on the strategies 4. A collective culture in should be enhanced in firms in order to give the human capital the correct working environment 5. There should be management and leadership styles that support and motivate the human capital to enhance its performance How to cite Performance Management System, Essay examples

The Taming Of The Shrew Persuasive Essay Example For Students

The Taming Of The Shrew Persuasive Essay How does Katherina in The Taming Of The Shrew change and develop as the play progresses?  In this essay I am going to be studying the character of Katherina from William Shakespeares play The Taming Of The Shrew.  Katherina is a fiery, bad-tempered, violent shrew that nobody likes. Men are petrified of her! Her sister Bianca has a great number of suitors and all the male attention. This includes her father who clearly favours Bianca. We first meet Kate in Act one, Scene one, L.50-54. Her father states that no one shall marry his youngest daughter (Bianca) until he finds a husband for Kate.  To cart her rather! Shes too rough for me. Says Gremio, L.55, in response to Baptistas suggestion about finding a suitor for Kate, L.48-54. This obviously shows he doesnt like her much if he feels she should be treated like a prostitute,  Hortensio then says, L.59-60, No mates for you unless you were of a gentler milder mould. Obviously Gremio isnt the only one who believes she is too rough. Katherina then speaks and we begin to understand why these men arent too fond of her temper.  to comb your noddle with a three-leggd stool and paint your face and use you like a fool. (L.64-65) She says she is going to hit him on the head with a stool and paint his face with blood. She is living up to her reputation!  It seems first impressions arent in Kates favour as Tranio, who has only known Kate a few minutes, comments, That wrench is stark mad, or wonderful forward. (L.69) He is saying she is bad-tempered. Maybe another reason for Kates bad temper is because of her jealousy over her sister? She has all the suitors, she is beautiful and it would appear that Baptista favours her.  and let it not displease thee, good Bianca, for I will love thee neer the less, my girl. Says Baptista, L.76-77.  Kate is quite aware of his favouritism and refers to her sister as A pretty peat!, L.78.  Baptista then says, L.91-101, Go in, Bianca, for I know she taketh most delight in music, instruments, and poetry Katherina, you may stay, for I have more to commune with Bianca. Once again his favouritism is evident. He doesnt invite Kate to go inside, just Bianca. Why, and I trust I may go too, may I not? Asks Kate, L.102. Kate is obviously envious of her sister and would have liked to be invited inside too.  Its no wonder she is so bad tempered! She has nobody on her side, her father favours her sister and everyone appears to dislike her.  Act two, scene one begins with Bianca and Kate arguing. Kate has tied her sisters hands together and they are discussing Biancas suitors.  Of all thy suitors here I charge thee tell whom thou lovst best. Demands Kate in Lines 8-9 showing her authority over her sister. Bianca responds by telling her sister she is still looking for someone she likes. Kate obviously doesnt believe her sister as she replies, L.13, Minion, thou liest! She refers to her sister as a minion, which is a term of abuse for the spoilt favourite child. This proves she does feel Bianca is favoured!  Baptista then enters and shows his partiality for his youngest daughter yet again.  Why, how now, dame! Whence grows this insolence? Bianca, stand aside. Poor girl, she weeps. (L.23-24) Baptista calls Katherina a dame (madam) which is a term of rebuke. He then unties her hands and says, L.25-28, Go ply thy needle; meddle not with her. For shame, thou hilding of a devilish spirit! Why dost thou wrong her that did neer wrong thee? It is starting to seem Baptista doesnt care about Kate at all; hes always too busy defending Bianca to even have time for her. .uffe76b898f6bdb24da283017f9d32790 , .uffe76b898f6bdb24da283017f9d32790 .postImageUrl , .uffe76b898f6bdb24da283017f9d32790 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uffe76b898f6bdb24da283017f9d32790 , .uffe76b898f6bdb24da283017f9d32790:hover , .uffe76b898f6bdb24da283017f9d32790:visited , .uffe76b898f6bdb24da283017f9d32790:active { border:0!important; } .uffe76b898f6bdb24da283017f9d32790 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uffe76b898f6bdb24da283017f9d32790 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uffe76b898f6bdb24da283017f9d32790:active , .uffe76b898f6bdb24da283017f9d32790:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uffe76b898f6bdb24da283017f9d32790 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uffe76b898f6bdb24da283017f9d32790 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uffe76b898f6bdb24da283017f9d32790 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uffe76b898f6bdb24da283017f9d32790 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uffe76b898f6bdb24da283017f9d32790:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uffe76b898f6bdb24da283017f9d32790 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uffe76b898f6bdb24da283017f9d32790 .uffe76b898f6bdb24da283017f9d32790-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uffe76b898f6bdb24da283017f9d32790:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: A review of the production of Blood Brothers EssayKate then speaks what she is feeling, L.31-34, What, will you not suffer me? Nay, now I see she is your treasure, she must have a husband, I must dance barefoot on her wedding day and, for your love to her, lead apes in hell. Kates jealousy is shown here, and it seems she is also jealous of all the suitors Bianca has as well as their fathers attention. When she talks about dancing alone on her sisters wedding day she is talking about the behaviour traditionally expected of an older, unmarried sister. The mention of leading apes in hell is referring to the lot of women who die old unmarried maids. Katherina then exits the sc ene. This is when Petruchio enters. He introduces himself to Baptista firstly and then checks what he will get for marrying Katherina. if I get your daughters love, what dowry shall I have with her to wife? (L.118-199) Hes making sure marrying this bad-tempered shrew he has heard about is worth his while.  Hortensio, disguised as Litio, then enters the scene with his head bleeding. He explains Kate hit him with his instrument! I love her ten times more than eer I did. Says Petruchio, L.160. O how I long to have some chat with her. Kates fiery temper has made him more fired up!  Baptista then exits and goes to fetch Kate. When she enters, the two argue and exchange witty insults. Petruchio flirts with Kate but all it does is make her more annoyed and fiery. He twists everything she says and is full of quick-witted, sexual and sarcastic replies. Kate probably feels quite intimidated which may be another reason why she dislikes him. She is also, most likely, quite shocked to have some male attention for once, despite the fact she is being her usual self and insulting him, which usually the men are frightened of and end up disliking her.

White Collar Crime Essays (1497 words) - Property Crimes

White Collar Crime White collar crime Welcome to the age of white collar crime. A time when the words thieves and businessmen go hand in hand. White collar criminals dont get their hands dirty in their work. They use their heads to get what they want instead of using a little muscle. These criminals are just as dangerous as the rapists and murderers. In these times, even the most seemingly respectable people are suspected of white collar crimes. President Clinton and the first lady Hillary Clinton have been tangled up in the Whitewater and Travelgate business ventures. Although the two have not been formally charged with any wrongdoing, there is a committee currently investigating their dealings and charges are not out of the question for either of them. In Michael Isikoffs and Mark Hosenballs Newsweek article Cracks in the Wall, they describe the Clintons dealings with Whitewater and the possible consequences of them: The Senate Whitewater committee is considering asking for perjury charges against Susan Thomas and Magg ie Williams, Mrs. Clintons chief of staff, in connection with her testimony about the removal of documents from Vince Fosters office (Isikoff 29). This case goes to show that there presently a growing problem with our country, and it is called white collar crime. White collar crimes are very numerous in kind. New ones are always being invented by someone with a good scam. Embezzlement, tax evasion, and fraud are some of the more popular kinds. A person who has the power of controlling money in a business is most likely commit embezzlement. A shortened definition of embezzlement is to steal money that is entrusted to Phillips 2 one. This is one of the fastest rising crimes in the nation. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, embezzlement rose thirty eight percent from 1984 to 1993 (U.S. Dept. of Justice 239). Forgery is another growing form of white collar crime. This is defined as the act of imitating or counterfeiting documents or signatures for the purpose of deceiving someone. Forgery also shows the same growth trends as embezzlement. From 1984 to 1993 forgery and counterfeiting increased twenty-one percent (U.S. Dept. of Justice 240). Bogus ads, job scams, and telephone scams are all examples of fraud. Basically these scams ask you to send money for something that is non-existent. An example of a telephone scam would be if someone called to ask for donations for a phony organization or charity. If you donated the money, it would either not get to the organization or charity you wanted, or the charity simply did not exist in the first place. The most obvious way these crimes differ from other crimes is that they dont require any dirty work. When people think of crimes, they think of get away cars and bank heists, but many criminals never even touch a gun. Their weapon of choice is a computer or a telephone. They are just as deadly with these as the man with the gun in the bank. White collar crimes are committed out of greed. The people who usual ly commit these crimes are financially secure. A lot of crimes are committed out of greed, but virtually all white collar crimes are committed out of greed. Statistics show that the majority of white collar crimes are committed by certain groups of people. Using the Federal Bureau of Investigations findings, White collar crimes are definitely committed by certain people. nine thousand five-hundred and six people, who were all over eighteen, were arrested for embezzlement in nine-teen ninety three. Only five hundred and eighty- Phillips 3 six people under eighteen were arrested for the same crime, in the same year. The findings were nearly the same although for men and women. Men were one and a half times more likely than women to embezzle money. The statistics for fraud and forgery were nearly the same (U.S. Dept. of Justice 239) From these findings, men over eighteen are most likely to be charged with embezzlement, fraud or forgery. Women over the age of eighteen are a little less likely to commit one of the specified white collar crimes. People in authority positions are also more likely to commit these crimes. These people have more

Free Essays on Ernest Hemingway Free Essays on Ernest Hemingway There are many connections between Ernest Hemingway’s life and his literary works, starting with his short stories all the way up to his most famous novels. The Nick Adams stories are short stories that tell the story of Ernest Hemingway’s life. These stories consist of many things, from camping with his father, to witnessing his first birth and death. Also they include Hemingway being out on the battlefield during World War I. The Nick Adams stories sum up his life and how he lived it. Hemingway’s family was fairly normal. Hemingway’s mother, Grace Hall, tried to civilize her children. This is probably the reason why she wanted Ernest to become a musician. On the other hand, his father exposed the boys to more masculine things like hunting, fishing, and living in the woods. Hemingway’s father, Clarence Edmond, was a physician. This may be the reason he tried to convince Ernest into studying medicine. Hemingway was a man of many contradictions and of a very long-winded nature. He worked as a reported for the Kansas City Star. In 1918 during World War I, he served as a Red Cross Volunteer in Italy as an ambulance driver and canteen deliver. While driving an ambulance one-day he was seriously wounded. This suggests why his writing emphasized physical and psychological violence and a need for courage. Hemingway was very good at identifying with the common people and capturing them in their speech patterns. This is sought to be the reason why in 1921, he went to Paris. While there he met a group of American authors and became a principle spokesman for a group of disillusioned young writers called the â€Å"Lost Generation†. In 1927 when Hemingway returned to the United States, he married Pauline Pfeiffer, mother of his two younger sons. He divorced her in 1940 and married the writer, Martha Gellhorn. Hemingway wrote a series of short stories called the Nick Adams stories. These stories were written about He... He was born at eight o’clock and weighed nine pounds and eight ounces and he was twenty-three inches long. His father Dr. Clarence Hemingway, he was a fervent member of the First Congregation church. After the death of his grandfather he and his family moved to a new house. This house had three stories and eight bedrooms. Growing up in the Hemingway wasn’t easy. No one in the house was allowed to anything enjoyable on the Sabbath Day, all you could was worship God. Lashes from a razor strap or a hairbrush were the punishment for bad behavior. Ernest developed into a well-rounded young man. Everything he done had to be done right. He attended Oak Park and River Township High School. Ernest enjoyed English and received good grades, but he was uninterested in other subjects. During high school he enjoyed boxing, canoeing, and writing articles for his school newspaper. After graduation he wanted to join the services or learn to write. Ernest got a job at the Kansas City Star after high school. Ernest’s job on the star was to cover the ‘short-stop run’ this entailed the Fifteenth Street Police Station, Union Station, and General Hospital. He was trained by a manual that declared good writing. He learned that good writer didn’t ramble on about things. Before long he grew bored with news stories, and wanted to become part of the war to see some real action. The only problem was he had a deficiency in his left eye and didn’t know if he could enter the war because of this problem. Ernest learned from a fellow reporter that he could be accepted, so he applied. Ernest applied for the position of ambulance driver. A few weeks after applying he got ... Free Essays on Ernest Hemingway Discovering a Subject It’s very important to be your own person. Ernest Hemingway is an author who is known for being generally disliked amongst most teenagers. I like his writings. I had previously read For Whom the Bell Tolls by Hemingway and enjoyed its wartime setting and surprise ending. Before I read any of Hemingway’s short stories I had assumed that all his stories were in wartime settings. For most of his stories this is true, but I was surprised at how many weren’t during a war. I have chosen four of Hemingway’s short pieces to analyze. After reading and taking notes on common themes and literary elements for many Hemingway stories I have decided to use â€Å"The Snows of Kilimanjaro†, â€Å"The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber†, â€Å"Soldier’s Home† and â€Å"In Another Country†. â€Å"The Snows of Kilimanjaro† is about a man Harry, and his wife, Helen. It takes place in Africa during a hunting trip. Harry has developed gangrene from what started as a small scratch in his leg. Harry is barely alive and welcoming death at the start of the story. He soon fears death as he realizes he wants to live. When death is brought to his camp for him in the form of a hyena, he succumbs to death and dies in the end. â€Å"The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber† also takes place in Africa on a Safari. The main characters are husband and wife also, Francis and Margaret. Francis has lost his pride and his wife’s affection because he was too cowardly to kill a charging Lion. Wilson, the safari guide and hunter, is left to kill the lion himself. Wilson’s occupation and courage are attractive to Margaret who then sleeps with him. Francis is aware that she has had many lovers before and this incident only tears the couple apart further. The story en ds with Francis trying to redeem his pride by chasing down a buffalo. They think he has finally killed it when it suddenly charges them again and brushes Francis on the head. At th... Free Essays on Ernest Hemingway Ernest Hemingway lived his life to the fullest. He experienced more than any other man. Since not many people traveled as much as Ernest, Ernest shared his experiences in books. In â€Å"The Snows of Kilimanjaro†, â€Å"Hills like White Elephants†, and â€Å"In Another Country†, Ernest Hemingway uses a great deal of dialogue to help the reader identify with the characters in the story to show the reader how he perceives the situation of his experiences. In Ernest Hemingway’s short story, â€Å"In Another Country†, a man is shocked by reality when he hurt his leg in World War I. This short story is primarily described with dialogue between the wounded man and other injured patience in the hospital. The short story takes place in Milan, Italy, in the middle of winter, during World War I. The events in â€Å"In Another Country†, that are discussed relate to Ernest’s experiences as a Red Cross ambulance driver. One night when Ernest decided to work a longer shift in the trenches, a bomb exploded right next to him. The only thing between Ernest and the bomb was a soldier. Without even thinking, Ernest immediately begin carrying the injured men out of the trench. While Ernest was carrying a man, he was shot in the knee. In â€Å"In Another Country† Ernest describes his experiences in the hospital in Milan. Even though it is never said the narrator in the story is obviously Ernest. The dialogue between the Italian major and the narrator of the story, first is focused on the majors hand injury, and the machines that are suppose to provide the miracle cure for the major’s and the narrator’s injuries. But what the reader quickly learns is that the major suffers not from the injury of his hand, but the loss of his wife. The machines becomes a hollow promise with unbelievable photographs with miracle cures, but the message is the majors life is empty with the loss of his wi... Free Essays on Ernest Hemingway Ernest M. Hemingway Do you ever ask yourself what makes life meaningful? For American novelist and short-story writer Ernest Hemingway, it was courage. The characters in his works might not win, but they always live and die bravely. Hemingway told it how it was and didn't hold anything back. Hemingway is well known for his novels of war, big game hunting, fishing, and bullfighting. One of his most famous works, "The Old Man and the Sea," describes an old fisherman's fight to keep a giant fish he caught from being eaten by sharks. Another of his famous works, "For Whom the Bells Tolls," describes a guerrilla fighter during the Spanish Civil War who knew he was doomed to fail. Ernest used his life when he wrote; including everything he did and everything that ever happened to him. He nevertheless remained a private person while wanting his stories to be read but also wanting to be left alone. He once said, "Don't look at me. Look at my words." During World War I Ernest served as an amb ulance driver, in Italy, for the American Red Cross and very much like Frederick Henry of, "A Farewell to Arms," was shot in his knee, recuperates in a hospital and tended by a caring nurse. Like the hero, in the book, he fell in love with the nurse and was given a medal for his heroism. In addition they both enjoyed drinking large amounts of alcohol as well. In "For Whom the Bell Tolls," Hemingway summarizes his own dissatisfaction about his father when he recalls his father's suicide and a character, Jordan, says, "I'll never forget how sick it made me the first time I knew he was a †¦ coward." This goes back to support how Hemingway wasn't afraid to speak his mind and also how he used his life when he wrote. I believe that Hemingway was obsessed with death. In the book, "A Farewell to Arms," Henry met his love, Catherine Barkley, before he was shot, but Catherine and her child died while she was giving birth. Many times Hemingway did not want to expose h...

Teen suicide research paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Teen suicide - Research Paper Example These changes are known as clinical depression. The symptoms that lead to depression show lack of sleep, outburst, overwhelming sadness, changes in physical activities and suicidal thinking etc. Moreover, sadness is considered as a normal reaction when an individual is disappointed in life. Likewise, it may become an alarming situation if sadness converts into hopelessness, helplessness and worthlessness that may lead in clinical consultation. However, depression is a more severe situation, especially once it starts to interfere in day-to-day life and ability to work, study, eat and sleep. b) Feeling of Worthlessness and Guilty Unfortunately, when a person is in depression he feels worthless, flawed, and inadequate. In fact, it worsens the condition. A survey held by Dr. Aaron Beck revealed that 80% of the people who are suffering from depression showed hatred and dislike towards themselves ("Feeling Worthless and Depression). Moreover, a depressed person feels defeated in all the as pects of life, for example, in attractiveness, health, intelligence, work etc. all these negative thoughts for this reason lead to lower one’s self esteem. ... Furthermore, an irritable person every now and then complains unexplained aches and pains in body for instance headaches, stomachaches and pain in body as a result if medical examination is carried out no medical causes will be revealed. Hence, it indicates that a person is more likely on the road to depression. Above all, depressed teens are extremely sensitive to criticism, negative response and disappointment. On the other hand, they depart with their friends gathering and tend to isolate. For instance, teens that are fatally disheartened habitually make ‘attention-getting’ attempts deceitful on suicide. An escalating number of youths endeavor and are successful at committing suicide and for this reason; suicidal thoughts or behaviors should always be taken seriously ("Understanding Depression: Signs, Symptoms, Causes, and Help "). 2) Effects on Teen Depression There are significant effects of depression some of them are so serious that medical treatment may become ne cessary. Running away indicates a loud cry for aid in depression by a teenager. Another frequent effect due to depression is substance abuses in youths for example drugs and alcohol. Self-mutilation with an intention to injure oneself for instance, pulling of hair, cutting veins, self-burning etc. are definite signs of depression. Furthermore, the person shows irresponsible and reckless behavior thus, performing unsafe sex, reckless driving, careless attitude, self-hatred and suicidal thoughts. a) Drug and Alcohol Abuse When a person suffers from drug abuse as well as struggling with mental health problems, it is very difficult to escape this addiction; this is known as dual diagnose. The first lesson also gives an overview how you can create a hyperlink on a web page. The tag â€Å"† was used to create a hyperlink. Use bar to link section of the documents to other pages. For example, In this lesson, creating of a new site took the center stage by defining site setting using Site Setup dialog box. The Servers, Versions as well as advanced setting options used in defining your site. This lecture also declared the DOCTYPE used in HTML5 which is . The lesson also looked at the format of saving the new site created. The file created should have â€Å"html† file format and only special characters such as underscores (_) is used to separate the words. You should save it on one major folder. CSS helps in defining appearance of a web page. You can set background color or link color whichever applicable using CSS. It was important to note that Document Type set to HTML5 is set as Unicode (UTF-8) and that Adobe Photoshop is being used in a tracing image such as JPEG and GIF. We looked at local root folder on how one can copy, select, view or open files from it. It also addresses graphic file types being displayed by web browsers. The graphic files discussed include GIF that condenses color images and used mostly in areas with flat colors like logos. JPEG format is used in inline images. When inserting a logo/image, use the format. You can then set logo/image width and length. Inserting of Photoshop smart objects in an html form was also tackled. Use in group-block elements. When using HTML tables use attributes such as dl, dt, and

Improving the Efficiency of Semantic Based Search

Improving the Efficiency of Semantic Based Search An Effective Approach to Improve the Efficiency of Semantic Based Search Merlin Ann Roy ABSTRACT: The incredible progress in the size of data and with the great growth of amount of web pages, outdated search engines are not suitable and not proper any longer. Search engine is the best significant device to determine any information in World Wide Web. Semantic Search Engine is innate of outdated search engine to solve the above problem. The Semantic Web is a postponement of the existing web where data is given in fixed meaning. Semantic web tools have an vital role in improving web search, because it is functioning to produce machine readable data and semantic web technologies will not exchange traditional search engine Introduction The keyword search engine does not provide the relevant result because they do not know the meaning of the words and expressions used in the web pages. The incredible progress in the size of data and with the excessive development of amount of web pages, traditional search engines are not suitable and not proper anymore. Search engine is an important tool to determine any information in World Wide Web. The Semantic Web is an postponement of the existing web where data is given in fixed meaning. Semantic web machineries have a vital role in improving web search, because it is functioning to produce machine readable data and semantic web technologies will not exchange traditional search engine. The keyword search engine like Google and yahoo and the semantic search engine like Hakia, DuckDuckGo and Bing are selected to search. While comparing both of the search engines, semantic engine result was shown better than keyword search engine. Some pages contain hundreds of words just to attract the users. It shows only the advertisement of the page rather than giving the relevant result to the users, If a user gives a keyword in the search engine that itself will suggest for so many pages according to the previous user search. But if the keyword is wrong it does not going to show up anything. This research work proposes a framework to resolve this problem called enhanced skyline sweep algorithm. Algorithm says that even if the particular keyword given by the user is wrong, the search engine is going to give the relevant result to the user 2. Semantic Web Search Engine The semantic search greatly advances search exactness of the query related data and the search engine provides the exact content, the user intent to know. There’s no rejecting the control and reputation of the Google search engine. By using semantic search engine we will ensure that it results in more relevant and smart results. The search engines are able to compare or extract the data and gives very relevant results for the queries. A. Approaches to Semantic Web There are four methods for semantic search. And the method differs that is based on the semantic search engine .First method uses contextual analysis to help to disambiguate queries. Second is reasoning and third is natural language reasoning and the fourth is ontology search 3. Literature Survey In [1] researchers comparing the performance of different keyword search techniques and there results was not up to the expectation level .The run time performance was poor and the execution times for various search techniques vary for different evaluations In [2], it explains and proposes an effective move towards keyword query in relational database. Keyword search technique in the web cannot be applied directly to the databases as data which present in the internet are of different forms. That is in databases the information is seen as data tuples and relationships. Researchers proposes a model called semantic graph model consist of database metadata, database values, user terms and their semantic connections In [3], Systems produce answers quickly for many queries but the other side many others they take a long time or sometimes fail to produce answer after exhausting memory. It conclude that this approach is successful in returning a combination of answers in predictable amount of time In [4],researchers investigates about the problem that occurs when the user searches for a data base query on a SQL database SQL database suggests so many tuples that satisfies the given query. The problem is when too many tuples are there in the answer. It leads to many-answers problem .They propose a ranking approach for the answers for database queries In [5], researchers found that the problem for the graphical structured textual data is extracting best answer trees from a data graph. XML and HTML data can be characterized as graphs by using entities as nodes and relationships as edges. To achieve this elasticity, they create a novel search frontier prioritization technique and this technique is centered on spreading activation. In [6], it proposed a new approach semantic search engine which will answer the intelligent queries and also more efficiently and accurately. They used XML Meta tags to search the information. The XML page contains built in and user defined tags. The proposed approach proves that it takes less time to answer the queries. Using W3C compliant tools helps the system to work on any platform In [7] it evaluates search performance of various search engine by allowing each query to run in keyword based search engine as well as semantic based search engine. For both keyword-based search engines and the semantic based search engine semantic search engine performance was low In [8] it presented a generic approach for mapping queries in a user language into an expressive logical language and also presented a particular instantiation of our generic approach which translates keyword queries into DL conjunctive queries using knowledge available in the KB In [9], Semantic knowledge has repeatedly been engaged to apply relational database reliability. It also proposals the chance to convert a query into a semantically equivalent query which is more efficient .This paper explains a meaning based transformation technique that uses constraints and semantic integrity to reduce the cost of query processing In [10], In this paper, a survey is done on the web search engine that are developed by different authors and they confirmed that no search engine gives answer properly and seamlessly modern means up-to-date In [11], This paper, a survey done about the semantic based search engine to extract the gifted features of various semantic search engine and also it says about the explanation of some of the better semantic search engine In [12], In this paper, a survey is done on the approaches and features of some of the semantic search engines and they give a detail about the various advantages and techniques of some of the best semantic search engine .And the difference between the semantic search engines and traditional search In [13],the paper says that retrieving relevant information by the search engine is tough. To solve the above problem the semantic search engine plays a vital role in computer system. A survey is done on the generations of search engines and advantages, features of the various search engines and also survey is done on the role in web In [14], Traditional search engine does not provide the relevant information because it does not know the meaning but the semantic search engine are meaning based search engine and it can overcome the above problem. This paper gives a brief about the traditional search engine and keyword search engine In [15], the paper says that however a number of techniques have been implemented and proposed those all had a lack of standardization for system evaluation. This paper gives an empirical evaluation of the performance for the relational keyword search systems. They concluded with the results like many existing search technique is not giving a good performance and also discover the relationship between execution time and factors that mottled in earlier calculations 4. Methodology Fig 1: System Architecture The above Fig 1 says that when the user gives a particular query in the semantic search engine it will extract the relevant result and gives to the user. If the particular query is wrong the result is not going to show to the user .So the skyline sweep algorithm helps to give the relevant result even if the particular query is wrong by key combination process. In this various enhancements on resource in keyword search is introduce the Skyline sweep is the process of extension has been an active area of research throughout the past decade. Despite a significant number of research papers being published in this area, no research prototypes have transitioned from proof-of-concept implementations into deployed systems. The lack of technology transfer coupled with discrepancies among existing evaluations indicates a need for a thorough, independent empirical evaluation of proposed search techniques. Two data sets IMDb and Wikipedia contain the full text of articles, which emphasizes sophi sticated ranking schemes for results. Our data sets roughly span the range of data set sizes that have been used in other evaluations even though our IMDb and Wikipedia data sets are both subsets of original databases. Using a database subset likely overstates the efficiency and effectiveness of evaluated search techniques. A. USER INTERFACE To connect with server user must give their username and password then only they can able to connect the server. If the user already exits directly can login into the server else user must register their details such as username, password and Email id, into the server. Server will create the account for the entire user to maintain upload and download rate. Name will be set as user id. . Logging in is usually used to enter a specific page. Example: Create node and set name, port for that node. Nodes are created and displayed. B. ADMIN MODULE: Admin maintain the user information. And he can upload the file to search the user. The file uploaded completed then only the user can able to search the file what we are want. And then admin can check the user information. Suppose here one file is searched that related all information is stored into admin. Searching information mean when the user searched the file and timing everything stored in admin. Finally admin check what file we are uploaded. Example: Admin upload the files into database .And then check the uploaded files. C.  Query processing Query processing means what we are searching that is passed by query. Admin uploaded all files are stored in database. User search in database where is available the requested keyword. Suppose the requested file is available in database that is passed to user. Suppose the user give one keyword depends upon the keyword all related lines are displayed. In that line from user get what are the data we need. This file searching and execution details is stored in data base. When ever need this we can able to view this details. Example: User searches the Query (keyword) in database. User gets that query related output. D. Recommended module Recommended module meant suppose now we give any keyword wrongly that word automatically going to mapped correct keyword. And then displayed what are the keyword mapped related that word. Suppose we give any wrong keyword that related all correct word going to mapped and displayed. Here we used â€Å"Skyline sweep algorithm† for automatically checked that correct keyword. Example: The user gives the wrong query. Key combination Will give the correct output E. Top ranking File ranking can be viewed by the chart. Top rank meant most of the files viewed by user that is called top ranked. That files are come in first. After then only comes the user searching keyword. So now we can easily understand which files are mostly viewed by user. That ranking is displayed in chart. Example: User searches the keyword. The keyword already viewed by user, that keyword displayed in first. 6. Advantages Reduce Time consumption during retrieval. Efficient to search an data in various search engines. Easy to execute in realistic manner in proposed system 7. Conclusion and Future Work It is concluded that searching the internet today is a encounter and it is projected that approximately partial of the complex questions go unanswered .Semantic search has the power to enhance the traditional web search. Whether a search engine can meet all these conditions still remain a question .We proposed a framework using enhanced skyline sweep algorithm to overcome this problem. In which the process can be done by the favor a realistic query workload instead of a larger workload with queries that are unlikely to be representative in various resource that can being with experimental results do not reflect well on existing relational keyword search techniques. Runtime performance is unacceptable for most search techniques. Memory consumption is also excessive for many search techniques in our experimental results, question to the scalability and improvements claimed by previous evaluations so we will prefer the consumption on runtime of searching an data in upcoming technologies . 8. Beyond Belief

In Deborah Lipstadts’ book Denying the Holocaust, author reveals the rising doubt about the different revelation during the war (specifically Second World War ). The author commences a deterring commission not just by exposing but also by introducing who and what are those that renounce such Holocaust. Admitting that even the tiniest shade of skepticism on the truth about the Holocaust are influenced by some powerful entities are indeed unacceptable. The occurrence of these Holocausts are considered and recognized by some.To some extent, the book is not seeking for an absolution as Lipstadt had said. The academe, the media and the public are gravely vulnerable to lies, and that is why the book serves as a caution to those who want to get into these entities. The book on Holocaust denial was written not just to provide a kind of authority for those who want to cover the truth behind these Holocausts but also to learn more about the skepticism which most people don’t mind asking about. Specifically, the author wrote about the growing Holocaust advocates and its corresponding effects on certain historical events.Up until now though the Second World War is over, the war on the truth behind the Holocausts is just beginnng. The author stresses more about the endeavors to refute the Nazi extermination of the Jews which is one of the crucial messages of it that is being disregarded. The authors’ purpose is to speak to the public through presentation as coherent a manner as probable the history of the beginning of the arguments of the deniers and the argument themselves. Lipstadt began this by introducing the start of the past traditions of revisionists in the 1900s.Then slowly into the current tussle, citing the varying â€Å"segments† of the rebuffed Holocausts plus the truth that the incident that has escalated in extent and strength ever since 1970s. Somehow, whenever an common folk who reads the book will be educated of the true type of these rebuffed Holocausts and be guarded for several indications of the impairing effect wherever. The crucial part of the book entirety is that it arranges a plain clear and familiar guide of how far the deniers have gone on attempting to renounce or clarify away the Nazis mayhem during Second World War.Nazis used preposterous propagandas that up until now, though the Germans had lost in the war, Nazism continues. The Jews were blamed in actual fact for all what the Nazis have done. What the Germans did, which â€Å"any country† would do for its own protection, were provoked by the Jews. Certain accusations were tossed to the Jews, like using the mass media as its main tool in exercising its authority and the media composed mostly of Jews will work together as brothers. That the Jews wanted to have the power over the world’s funds by using the Germany for Israel.Even the Germans themselves find these ideas absurd but still they used it in the war and find beneficial f or them during the war. In order to even out the Nazis violence with every different abuse done, the allied nations were directed by these propagandas. The deniers attempted to reveal that even though Nazis perpetrate crimes opposed to the Jews, they should not be singled out in perpetrating such crimes and for that reason they’re not the ones’ who must be blamed for these crimes ad they do not deserve special punishment at all. There were attempts to minimize the total of Jews killed to a much smaller than six million. Even though the facts are undeniable and the proofs are convincing of the deaths of millions of people in their account and in addition to the admission of Nazis on trial at Nuremberg, Holocaust deniers always find time rebuffing these actuality. The author herself is having hard time pointing out a lot of times all over the book the ambiguity of their assertions; it seems that the main peculiarity of these deniers constantly paying no attention to these presented facts. There are esteemed scholars that are now joining in the crew of defending those who were supposed to be interrogated. The author herself is alarmed by these scholars, because they’re not racist and not even a German in blood and may account for more advocates of Holocausts. The major composition of the book is mainly monographic which share out a great amount of information in a very simple and specific way so that even undergraduate students will easily understand the contents.Though monograph means a singe subject, the book itself does not only showcase a single subject but even broader ones. An absolute definition of the book is somewhat as well restrictive. The authors’ reliability for undertaking the issue is well-establish. Certain facts are supported with historical evidences. It gives more understanding beyond someone’s perspective of the reality of what once has affected the word we are living. . References Gingerich, Charity. 2006. Mon thly Column. Emory University. Literary Criticism Paper

An archetype Is a reoccurring pattern of Images, symbols, or a situation. The hero archetype Is one who tries to fulfill a necessary task and tries to restore Justice to a society. The hero will commonly go through the hero's journey in search for truth and information on restoring Justice to a society. All archetypal heroes share certain characteristics. In 1984, by George Orwell, Winston follows the hero's cycle because there is nothing told of his childhood, he looses favor with the Party, and Winston is not burled after all.Throughout the book ‘We are told nothing of his holding† (Garry 1 1 ) besides the few memories or dreams he shares with Julia or himself. After waking up crying one morning, Winston shares a memory of his childhood Tijuana; he recalls the time him and his sister and mother spent most of their days in underground shelters, hiding from air raids. Many times, Winston and his family went without food. From starving one day, Winston stole chocolate from his mother and sister and ran away, never seeing them again.Winston constantly dreams about his mother and Is convinced he murdered her because he stole her chocolate and left her there to starve. However, his subconscious Is his only road to the truth. Although the reader is given small memories on his childhood â€Å"nothing remained of his childhood except a series of bright-lit tableaux occurring against no background and mostly unintelligible† (Orwell, 3). Implying, the reader is not really told anything of his childhood besides the subconscious memories and few unclear images In 1984, the God Is represented through Big Brother. This Is true because Big Brother Is perceived as the ruler of Oceania and he Is a very high figure to the people. Big Brother's face is constantly being broadcasted and he is even stamped on he coins. Thus, Winston â€Å"Later loses favor with the gods and/or his subjects† (11) by wanting to do many rebellious acts and hateful thoughts. Fo r example, Winston begins to have sex with Julia, which was only, â€Å"a blow struck against the Party† (126).Implying there was no true emotion towards Julia and Winston and Julia only had sex to rebel against the Party because having sex Is a major crime In Oceania. Also, Winston looses his support towards the Party shown when he wrote â€Å"Down with Big Brother† in his diary. Again, signifying his hatred towards the society and writes to mind people of the better times in Oceania and writes about what it used to be and what it can still become. Towards the end of the book Winston and Julia are surrounded by troops of the Thought Police. From there Winston is taken to the horrid Room 101 where he Is tortured. Room 101 holds the person's greatest fear and for Winston It Is rats. As the rats come closer to his face he yells, â€Å"Do It to Julia! Do It to Julia! Not me! Julia! I don't care what you do to her. Tear her face off strip her to the bones. Not me! Julia! N ot me! † (286). It is here Winston betrayals Julia and fully egging to believe and love Big Brother and the Party. Winston did not only betrayal Julia, but he also abandons himself.Winston follows the hero cycle because â€Å"His body is not buried, but nevertheless† (1 1 Meaning the Ministry of Love broke and tortured his mind and will and mentally killed him but Winston Is still physically living. Hang out with Julia. However, he is essentially a slave because he cannot express any of his own feelings of rebellion, including to himself in the privacy of his mind. Winston was a very mentally strong character who understood the corrupt world he ivies in while nobody else does.During the beginning of the book he does not find any pleasure in Big Brother and as the story progresses he starts to love Big Brother. His goal is to change society's means and gain the freedom of thought back. However, he is a bizarre hero because he is middle-aged, has an average intelligence, and is very weak. He is a hero, although, with different heroic characteristics. Finally he is a hero because, Winston childhood is a mystery, his support for the Party is lost, and he becomes a walking slave for the Party and Big Brother.

Status Quo, From High School Musical - 925 Words

When you first referred to this assignment, I immediately thought about the song called â€Å"Status Quo† from High School Musical. This was one of my favorite movies when I was a teenager. The song plays in the movie while Gabrielle’s friends are telling her that if she dates Troy, the popular basketball player, it will mess us the â€Å"status quo.† In a cute dance number they break out in song in the cafeteria singing. From watching that movie, I already had an understanding of what I needed to reflect on. I am a very organized person. At the beginning of the semester, I read through the syllabus. I knew that we would have a reflection paper on the course, so I have been preparing all semester to write this paper. Every chapter I read and summary I completed, I would jot down concepts and ideas that stuck with me. I took this class because it was a requirement for my ASL minor. I did not realize what I was going to learn and I think that worked out well in the end. In August, I was aware of Deaf culture. I knew the difference between little d and big D of deaf. I had been exposed to certain aspects through my past professors like Danny Roush, who is a CODA. This campus has a tight-knit bond between the Deaf community and students. EKU has an extremely credible ASLIE department. They have even took advantage of the Living Learning Communities and have a Deaf floor in Walters Hall. I was exposed everything, but I was an outsider looking in.
